A twitter essay:
Watching The Dark Knight last night, it struck me: this movie is really well done, but did the plot really need to be this complicated?
It might be stronger with one round less of "Joker has an ingenious plot, they think they've foiled it but it's all part of the plan."
That said, one of my favorite ironies is that Joker's claim that he isn't "a man with a plan," that "I just do things," is a complete lie.
Nolan's Joker is a lateral thinker and good improviser, but all of his plans rest on the appearance of omnipotence through careful planning.
Much like, y'know, Batman.
